Pablo Hernandez is out of contract at Leeds United at the end of the season.
Hernandez is into the final months of his deal at Elland Road, but his recent performances have shown that he still has a huge amount to give to Paul Heckingbottom’s team.
He was excellent when he came on in the disappointing defeat to Sheffield United and followed that display by proving to be a real catalyst for Leeds’ comeback in their clash with Bristol City on Sunday. He set up all three of the Whites’ goals in the last two games.
Nevertheless, he has confirmed that the club are yet to make any progress regarding a new contract, but insisted that he would like to remain at Elland Road next season.
“Obviously. I am very happy here. But it doesn’t only depend on me,” he then added when asked whether he wanted to stay.
It certainly seems that giving the 32-year-old a new deal makes a lot of sense. No Leeds player has provided more assists than the six that Hernandez has contributed in the Championship this season, while he has also managed to score four goals.
And while his age may suggest that he is edging towards the latter stages of his career, he is showing no signs of slowing down, and has shown the kind of leadership qualities that Heckingbottom should arguably be looking for as he begins to construct the squad he believes can take the club forward.
Based on his current form and his desire to stay, it would arguably be a big mistake for Leeds to not put a fresh contract on the table for the Spanish playmaker.
