Ozil v Oscar: Arsenal star far better going forward – but Chelsea man has the Mourinho effect

Ahead of this Sunday afternoon’s Premier League clash, here’s how two of the league’s most creative attacking midfielders compare.

In terms of attacking midfield, Chelsea and Arsenal boast enough riches to fill the Premier League whole.

Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Oscar, Santi Cazorla, Willian and many more: the list is a who’s who of global talent.

How, though, do the London sides’ players cross-compare going into their meeting this weekend?

If one were to look at Sanchez v Hazard, Ozil and Oscar would be next up…

Going forward, however, there’s no competition: the Arsenal man wins hands down.

Indeed, in terms of chances created, dribbles won, final-third passes, touches, goals, assists and passing accuracy (you can breathe now after that long list), Ozil triumphs over his Chelsea counterpart.

Oscar hasn’t had one of his finest seasons this term and is not a 100 per cent regular for the Blues. But Ozil, too, has had his rough patches this campaign, while also missing out through injury. And the German is still a cut above.

But there is one caveat: the Jose Mourinho effect.

Indeed, defensively, Oscar is a far superior worker to Arsenal’s big-money man. In the key defensive areas, the 23-year-old triumphs resoundingly. He is, however, dispossessed a little more and Ozil recovers the ball slightly more often.

The Gunners star is, therefore, the overall winner – but Chelsea’s Brazilian is the better defender. Is that consolation enough?
