It’s about time Tottenham invested in signing a young talent.
Substantial investment in a new stadium meant Tottenham stepped back from making a splash in the transfer market last summer.
They took an extreme approach, not signing anybody at all, and should really have been looking out for bargain moves for young talent, if they decided it was too expensive to shop at the top or mid-range end of the market.
It was just three years ago that Tottenham struck one of the best ever deals in English football, to sign Dele Alli for £5 million.
Spurs hit the jackpot with Alli, and it is strange they have not entered the market to try and replicate the move since.
A player they appear to be looking towards right now is Feyenoord talent Orkun Kokcu, report The Mail.
Kokcu is drawing comparisons with Christian Eriksen and at just 17 has huge potential.
Of course it’s uncertain whether Kokcu has a chance of emulating Eriksen. But sooner or later Tottenham should take the chance on a player who might.
If they move now, they can sign him for a cheap price compared to what he would cost in two to three years time, and potentially improve him earlier by allowing their coaches to work their magic.
Chelsea and Arsenal are both interested, and Tottenham should show the same urgency they did with Alli, even if it means loaning Kokcu back until the end of the season.
Tottenham shouldn’t be blamed if they sign him and it does not work out as a success.
It’s important they try. If not Kokcu, then a player who they feel is worthy instead.
