Liverpool talent Ben Woodburn endured a frustrating campaign last season, ad he’s now suffered a blow this term too.

The Welsh attacker was sent on loan to Sheffield United in the summer of 2018, but was sent back to Anfield after just eight appearances.

Having spent the second half of last season in Liverpool’s Under-23’s, Woodburn needed to get out and play again this season, and made a surprise move to League One with Oxford United.

Woodburn, 19, hit one goal and five assists in his first 12 games for Oxford, suggesting that he could be in line for a big season – but it’s all gone a bit sour for him now.

Woodburn lasted just 14 minutes against Accrington Stanley on Saturday, and has now been ruled out for three months with a broken metatarsal.

That’s a cruel blow for the teenager, who was just starting to find his form at the Kassam Stadium under Karl Robinson, and it looks like he’ll head back to Liverpool for now.

The Standard claim that Woodburn is returning to Liverpool’s Melwood training ground for his rehabilitation, before presumably going back to Oxford for the rest of the season when fit again.

Oxford fans have been taking to Twitter to react to the news, believing it’s a ‘massive loss’, as he was pulling the strings for the League One side, adding that ‘the world is cruel’ after learning of his lay-off.
