The Charlton Athletic owner Thomas Sandgaard has claimed that Celtic are one of the clubs who are “very interested” in Alfie Doughty.
Doughty attracted bids from Celtic and had interest from English sides in the summer transfer window, according to London News Online.
The Charlton left-sider’s contract expires in the summer, and he can therefore enter talks with clubs outside of England about an end-of-season free transfer from the new year, unless a positive resolution is found before then.
That prompted The Daily Record to claim that Doughty may have played his final game for Charlton, having suffered a hamstring injury which could keep him out for the next four months.
But his manager Lee Bowyer is said to have confirmed to the website that a fresh deal has been offered.
Commenting on Doughty’s situation last week, however, Sandgaard told London News Online: “Yeah, we’re talking to Alfie and his agent.
“He’s currently injured – as we all know – but has certainly made a name for himself.
“Celtic in Scotland and other clubs are very interested in him.
“His pace is really something to take notice of and can be a huge asset for any club.
“We hope we can continue having Alfie at the club. He’s a great asset and one of the many investments we’ve made in youth players over the years.
“I hope he’ll continue the journey with us. Hopefully we’ll get promoted again – in not too long. If Alfie stays with us he might even be playing Premier League football one day.”
Doughty can operate equally well at left-midfield or left-back – the latter a position currently occupied by the on-loan Diego Laxalt at Celtic.
The 20-year-old has scored or assisted eight goals in 41 games for Charlton, whose academy he progressed through.
