Sheffield Wednesday claimed their first three points on the road since April with a 1-0 win over Blackburn on Tuesday night.

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered from inconsistencies in the early stages of the Championship failing to win any of their first four games on the road, which is the same record they had at the start of last season.

Their away form would have been something the club would have been looking to rectify, especially as they recorded only six wins on their travels in the 2015/16 season which was the lowest amount of the top seven clubs.

In contrast, their home form has been impressive, claiming four wins from five with their only defeat in the league coming against Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

After last year’s superb campaign, where they fell one game short of a long awaited return to the Premier League, the Owls were rightfully seen as one of the main promotion candidates this time round. That is why Tuesday night’s clash against Blackburn was crucial as it presented an ideal opportunity to break their away duck and go on a consistent run of form.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Steven Fletcher scores their first goal

Scotland striker Steven Fletcher was Wednesday’s match winner with a deflected strike in the 22nd minute from just outside the box. It was also his 100th career league goal and third for the club since joining on a free transfer from Sunderland. The visitors controlled the game for the most part, restricting Blackburn to just two shots on target for the full 90 minutes.

The Star reported that Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal was thrilled with the win and the performance of Fletcher.

“My players were fantastic, they played like a team and we are very strong and consistent,” Carvalhal said “He (Fletcher) is a team worker closes the spaces well, and has really upgraded the team.”

Sheffield Wednesday now move up to seventh and join a group of teams on 17 points.

Blackburn Rovers manager Owen Coyle

Meanwhile for Owen Coyle, it was a disappointing night after coming into the game as winners of their last two league games. Other results on the evening saw Rovers drop back into the bottom three ahead of their away clash with Birmingham City on Saturday.
