Liverpool eased past Villarreal on Wednesday night in the Champions League with a 2-0 win – and, during commentary, Owen Hargreaves claimed Thiago was the best player on the pitch. The Spaniard is in stunning form.
Coming into the match, Jurgen Klopp’s side were in blistering form and on a high after defeating Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday – thanks to goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi. Thiago was excellent on Sunday.
He started, as Klopp made three changes – bringing in Ibrahima Konate, Jordan Henderson and Luis Diaz for Joel Matip, Naby Keita and Diogo Jota. Henderson’s deflected cross finally gave the dominant Reds the lead.
The second was a much better goal, Mo Salah getting another assist – as he threaded through Sadio Mane to score. A patient, but brilliant Liverpool performance at Anfield that sees them put one foot into the final.
During commentary on BT Sport, ex-Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves was full of praise for the in-form Thiago. He claimed the Spaniard was the best player on the pitch, and controlled the midfield.
“Thiago has been the best player on the pitch for me, in complete control of the game. The front three have been fantastic, but Thiago has been a level above,” Hargreaves told BT Sport, during his role as co-commentator.
Hargreaves on Thiago: A reminder, Liverpool bought him for £25m
In the summer of 2020, fans were pleading with their club to sign Thiago and they finally got their man – bringing him in from Bayern Munich. His first season was stop start at Anfield, injuries hampering his momentum.
But like many under Jurgen Klopp, Thiago came good in his second season – Konstantinos Tsimikas another example. Costing just £25m (Independent), Thiago has to be one of the best signings at Anfield in recent history.
