Blackburn Rovers manager Owen Coyle has told The Chronicle that Grant Hanley wanted to leave the club for Newcastle United.
Hanley left Blackburn for Championship rivals Newcastle on a five-year contract earlier this month.
Coyle has explained how the 24-year-old defender’s switch between the clubs came about.

“It’s like anything else, we all know that Grant Hanley is a very good player and I said that we certainly didn’t want to lose any of those players,” Coyle told The Chronicle.
“Newcastle were very persistent and kept coming back with offer after offer, and Grant Hanley told us that he wanted to go, that he wanted that move to Newcastle.”
Hanley had been on the books of Blackburn his entire professional career until his move to Newcastle in the summer transfer window.

The Scotland international scored two goals and created 12 chances in 44 Championship appearances for Rovers last season.
The defender had a pass accuracy of 69% and a shot accuracy of 29%, and won 206 headers, 13 dribbles and 63 tackles.
Newcastle will feature in the Championship next season after getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
The Magpies have been quite busy in the summer transfer window so far, signing Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Isaac Hayden among others.
Blackburn will be aiming to finish in the top 10 of the Championship next season.
