‘Overrated’: Should Celtic be worried by Filip Benkovic’s disastrous Croatia display?

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic would jump at the chance to sign Filip Benkovic on loan from Premier League outfit Leicester City again.

Nikola Katic and Filip Benkovic might have spent the last few months on either side of the Old Firm divide but they were paired together at centre-back when Croatia opened their U21 European Championship campaign against Romania on Tuesday.

Though it’s fair to say it was a game to forget for the two Croatian defenders.

They were left battered, bruised and beaten by a fleet-footed and clinical Romania side in San Marino, losing 4-1 against one of the tournaments least fancied teams.

Benkovic, in particular, was far from his best. A player who Leicester signed for £13 million last summer before spending an excellent spell on loan at Celtic, the former Dynamo Zagreb ace looked all at sea throughout and even gave away a penalty with a stray arm inside the penalty area.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun recently, Benkovic admitted that he was more than open to the idea of returning to Parkhead for another spell in Scotland. He even admitted that Celtic coach Neil Lennon had asked him to stay (Sun).

And even this dreadful performance should not stop Celtic from jumping at the chance to sign the 21-year-old again. But, clearly, he still has a lot to improve upon.
