Danny Rose says he is ‘over the moon’ that James Maddison signed for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur after he could have joined Newcastle United.

The former Tottenham left-back claimed that the England international ‘six months ago’ would have joined Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

But instead, he rocked up on Tottenham’s doorstep, as he labelled James Maddison as a ’special’ player, as he told Stadium Astro.

On his Premier League debut for Spurs, the 26-year-old supplied two assists as Ange Postecoglou’s side recorded a 2-2 draw against Brentford – he was lauded by club legend, Glenn Hoddle.

Then, he followed it up by helping Spurs record a memorable 2-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday evening.

All in all, it’s a brilliant start to life at his new club, with Rose sharing that Spurs finally have their Christian Eriksen replacement in the building.

“I had the privilege of training and playing alongside him with the national team and I was over the moon that he choose Spurs,” said Rose.

“Probably six months ago, he had Newcastle where he could have gone to – he has got the number ten on his back, which is nice. That’s him down to a tee, he backs himself.

“It’s just a shame that Harry has left and he won’t be able to help out with a lot of the assists for him.

“He (Eriksen) is someone that they haven’t replaced since he left. I know it is difficult to replace someone like Cristian Eriksen, but finally, now, they have got their man and I fully expect James to be up there, as he was at Leicester, with the assists and goal contributions – they have got a special player.”

Maddison is already a fan favourite

To nobody’s surprise, the all-action midfielder is wowing his new fans and becoming a favourite amongst them already.

For years, with a number of defensive-minded coaches in the dugout, the team has been crying out for a player of his ilk.

Now that Maddison has entered the building, they are cherishing every minute because it has been entertaining so far.
