Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first Premier League start for Liverpool in well over a year today.
Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain didn’t have a brilliant return to competitive action in midweek.
The former Arsenal star made his first start for Liverpool since April of 2018 in the European Super Cup win over Chelsea on Wednesday.
But it was a bit of a damp squib for the Liverpool midfielder, who struggled to get to grips with the intensity and was substituted by Jurgen Klopp at half-time in Istanbul.
However, the German kept faith with the 25-year-old and started him in this afternoon’s 2-1 win at Southampton.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has mainly been used as a midfielder under Klopp, who played him in a wide role at St Mary’s.
And the former Borussia Dortmund couldn’t have been more complimentary toward him, saying that he was ‘outstandingly good’ this afternoon.
He told The Echo: “Brilliant. It was different, he was outstandingly good.The 45 minutes on Wednesday we can now say they helped for sure. He felt the intensity and knew he was ready for it.
“We had to make changes and it was important in the centre of the park especially that we were really there, ready for all these long runs and decisive things.”
