Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he loved James Milner’s comments after his side’s game against Leicester City at the weekend, as per his comments on the club’s official website.
Milner stepped into Liverpool’s defence and put in an outstanding display as the Reds picked up a 3-0 victory over the Foxes on Sunday evening.
After the game Milner was interviewed, but he was keen not to revel on the limelight.
The experienced England international instead deflected the praise towards his Liverpool teammates.
And Klopp was delighted to hear Milner being so modest after the match.
“I mention that we are all about the collective here and I think our performance against Leicester demonstrated that,” Klopp said.
“That wasn’t just a win for the players who got game minutes. It was a win for the players who helped us prepare also and were ready if called upon to step up.
“James Milner – who played an outstanding game – outstanding – spoke so well afterwards. He barely said one word about himself, even though his was a performance you would sing a happy song about.
“Instead he talked about the overall contribution and included those who didn’t feature in the actual game but will in the coming days and weeks.
“It is so important that every player recognises their importance now and acts to look after themselves the best they can.”
Milner is set to have a key role to play at Liverpool in the coming weeks, with injuries stacking up.
The experienced defender’s ability to cover right across the backline and in midfield is set to be very handy, with so many players sidelined.
Milner looks almost certain to start for Liverpool this evening, when they take on Atalanta in the Champions League.
