Jordan Henderson has reiterated his admiration for Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah, after being asked about the latter’s contract.
Salah is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer of 2023.
And if no extension has been signed this summer, the Reds find themselves in an extremely precarious situation.
They could potentially begin next season in the knowledge that he could leave a year later and with other clubs knowing that, tempting offers could arrive at Jurgen Klopp’s desk.
Salah has been the heartbeat of this Liverpool squad since arriving for £36 million in 2017 [Guardian], firing the Anfield outfit to a Premier League and Champions League title.
Henderson was asked on BT Sport if there was any sign of Salah signing a new contract.
And here’s how the former Sunderland midfielder responded:
He told BT Sport: “He’s been phenomenal for a number of seasons. The numbers that he’s got – goals, assists. But even his general play, his work rate for the team, his leadership within the group.
“He’s an outstanding player and hopefully he can just keep going from strength to strength and help us to be more successful in the future.”
Sadio Mane is in the same boat contract-wise and it’s possible that Liverpool are looking for long-term successors.
Luis Diaz joined for £49 million in January and positionally that would suggest he’s a replacement for the Senegal international, while journalist Graeme Bailey reported in February that the Reds’ interest in Antony is related to Salah’s contract.
If the Merseysiders are already hunting replacements for Salah then, well, it’s a tad ominous for their prospects of tying him down.
