West Ham manager David Moyes has hailed Everton’s Jordan Pickford after his outstanding Euro 2020 with England.
Moyes used his Times column to praise the goalkeeper, who is yet to concede a goal at the tournament so far.
The Scot managed Pickford at Sunderland and gave an insight into what makes the goalkeeper so good.
“On the rare times someone has opened them up, Pickford has made very good saves,” Moyes said of England. “At Sunderland I promoted Jordan even though he was young, because his work in training was too good to ignore.
“He was very difficult to beat in the practice games and drills and you’d see him jumping up and roaring with pleasure when he made saves. He clearly had the personality to go with his ability, which was outstanding.
“We got relegated [in 2016-17], but would have gone down a lot earlier had Jordan not been so good. I always thought that he was going to go on to big things.
“Like a lot of young players, his decision-making was something he would need to improve and he really has. In this tournament his attitude is: “I’m keeping clean sheets, I’m not taking risks, I’m not giving anything away.”
Pickford has won the Golden Glove
Pickford has already won the Euro 2020 Golden Glove, even before England face Denmark tonight.
That’s because he has kept five clean sheets and nobody else in the competition can match that tally now.
Italy have kept three, while tonight’s opponents Denmark have only kept one.
Pickford has again shone on the international stage and a place in the final would be a deserved reward.
