Jamie Carragher told CBS Sport on Paramount+ (14/04/21 at 9:55 pm) that Liverpool duo, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nat Phillips, were ‘outstanding’ against Real Madrid.

Anfield on European nights is known for its famous comebacks, but not on Wednesday evening as Liverpool recorded a goalless second-leg draw against the Spanish champions.

Even though Liverpool dominated the attacking play, they couldn’t break down Madrid’s rigid defence that only conceded one goal over the two legs.

Despite getting knocked out, Carragher was impressed by two previously criticised individuals – Phillips and Alexander-Arnold.

“I thought he (Phillips) was brilliant,” said Carragher. “I thought Trent was outstanding as well.

“These are the two players that got a lot of criticism in the first leg. Certainly on that first goal. But again, they were excellent.

“People talk about the big problems at the back. I think Phillips has been outstanding since he has come in or certainly done a lot better than people expected.

“Trent, again, on the back of his performance in the first leg where he was really poor. I thought he was outstanding defensively and offensively. And with better finishing, he could have had a couple of assists.”

No corners were taken quickly last night, as the lack of crowd clearly had an effect on Liverpool producing another famous European night on Merseyside.

It now means that Jurgen Klopp’s men have to put everything into these last few weeks of the Premier League campaign because, as things stand, they will be playing on Thursday nights next season.

Whilst Liverpool still lack that bite in the final third, their form has picked up in recent weeks, as the nerves will really kick in for the supporters now.
