Stephen Warnock has praised the ‘outstanding’ Liverpool and Leeds quartet of Jurgen Klopp, James Milner, Patrick Bamford and Marcelo Bielsa for the role they played in the European Super League collapsing.

The ex-defender told BBC Sport that Monday night’s game between Leeds and Liverpool was a ‘big statement’ from all of those individuals.

Less than 24 hours after six English clubs had announced that they were going to be part of a breakaway league, the likes of Milner, Klopp, Bielsa and Bamford spoke against it.

And the wickets started to fall, with each English side, announcing one after the other, that they are now out of the proposed ESL.

There was a ferocious reaction to the deal as soon as it was announced and Warnock praised those who played their part.

“The house has finally fallen. We’ve been waiting for this to happen,” said Warnock. “Last night was a big statement from Jurgen Klopp, James Milner, Patrick Bamford and Marcelo Bielsa was outstanding.

“Then we wanted a bigger reaction today and we got it. When we go to Pep Guardiola and his love of competition, being able to be relegated, win things, that’s what sport’s about.

“Words from our elite members of our beloved game have been outstanding. It’s just shown the power of what the fans are to the game.

“How can we even think the fans aren’t important after the season we’ve just had? There has been zero atmosphere and the quality of the game has dropped. Now we’re starting to see it all unravel and it’s great to see.”
