Curtis Jones was arguably the star of the show for Liverpool last night.
The Reds absolutely demolished Lincoln City away from home as Jurgen Klopp’s side cruised into the next round of the League Cup, where Arsenal await.
Liverpool had the game dead and buried as a contest by the half-time whistle, with the Kirkby product scoring twice during a one-sided opening 45 minutes.
And Stephen Warnock has been singing the praises of the 19-year-old, labelling him ‘outstanding’ and emphasising his transformation into an attacking midfielder after watching him in a different role at Under-18 level.
He said to BBC Radio 5 Live: “The one player who’s standing out for me is Curtis Jones. The maturity he’s showing now. I watched him as a winger in the Under-18s and now he’s a midfielder who plays one and two-touch football with such an intelligence beyond his years. He’s been outstanding tonight.”
It’s such an important season for Jones at Liverpool.
With Thiago Alcantara signed, there’s added pressure on the teenager to impress but what a statement he made last night.
Jones won’t be playing ahead of a player like Thiago anytime soon – it remains to be seen if Klopp even wants to use him in the same sort of midfield role.
All the youngster can do is keep impressing when he gets the chances and based on last night, he’s going to grasp every single opportunity that comes his way.
