Back in January, Newcastle prospect Elliot Anderson joined Bristol Rovers on a short-term loan deal, where he’d play under Joey Barton.

Since the 19-year-old completed his move to the Memorial Stadium, things have been going very well for the teenager in League Two.

Anderson has scored three goals in 12 appearances so far, while also providing two assists, and he arguably netted his most important strike yet last night.

What’s the story?

Well, the Whitley Bay-born wonderkid scored the only goal of the game as Bristol Rovers defeated Colchester last night.

Anderson’s goal helped Barton’s side into seventh place in League Two, keeping their promotion hopes alive.

After the game, Barton made a very bold statement about the Magpies prodigy, as he likened him to Diego Maradona.

As quoted by Bristol Live, Barton said: “I’ve been listening to Bill Shankly tapes a lot today. He talked a lot about a 19-year-old Diego Maradona and how he slows down in the penalty area, exactly like Elliot Anderson does. Such a talent.”

Clearly, the 39-year-old rates Anderson very highly indeed.

Newcastle must use Elliot Anderson

Apart from the Longstaff brothers, it has been a while since Newcastle had a prospect emerge from the Academy and go on to make an impact on the first-team.

In our view, that should now change – Eddie Howe has to reward Anderson with a chance to make the step up.

Whether that comes during pre-season, or in the Premier League next term, the Magpies must give the youngster an opportunity.

He has earned one, in truth.

It would be extremely sad to see Newcastle dip into the transfer market to sign a multi-million pound forward who kills any hope Anderson had of playing first-team football at St James’ Park.

It would also send out a terrible message to others in Newcastle’s Academy.

Hopefully, Howe takes note of his efforts for Bristol Rovers, and gives the exciting attacker a chance next season.
