Speaking on the Where’s Jeff? Podcast, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has been dissecting Aston Villa’s performance against Chelsea, giving his view on Tyrone Mings’ showing against the London club.
It’s fair to say that Mings didn’t have the best afternoon against the Blues as his side were beaten 3-0, and Thompson couldn’t believe what he was seeing from the England international.
Indeed, the former Sky Sports pundit labelled Mings’ defensice showing as ‘absolutely shocking’.
What’s been said?
Thompson gave his view on Mings’ showing against Chelsea.
“Dean Smith was trying to be positive, but they lost 3-0, so we can’t say how well they played, but they did. Some of the defending though, from Tyrone Mings, and international player, it was absolutely shocking. The backpass, and one where Azpilicueta went past him as if he wasn’t there, it was absolutely outrageous.”

Tough day at the office
Mings had an absolute stinker against Chelsea, but we all know that’s not a true reflection of his ability as a defender.
The centre-back is undoubtedly talented, but Chelsea are the European champions, so struggling against Thomas Tuchel’s side is nothing to be ashamed of.
Yes, he should have done better, but playing against the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz is bound to lead to a nervy performance.
This will go down as a learning experience from Mings, and hopefully, he’ll be better prepared to play against the Blues next time around.
