Paul Merson has told Sportkeeda that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is his ‘out of the ordinary’ pick for the Golden Boot next season.
The TV pundit claimed that Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah will ‘once again’ be in the reckoning for the sought-after individual award, but he has backed Everton’s number nine to potentially be an out-of-the-box option for the Premier League’s top-scorer.
Calvert-Lewin enjoyed his best season in Everton colours scoring 16 Premier League goals last season, but it wasn’t better than the 22 Salah managed or the 23 by Harry Kane.
And ahead of the new campaign, Merson thinks Salah will be in for a shout once again, but he potentially backed his Merseyside rival to better him.
“Mohamed Salah will once again be in the reckoning as he always is,” said Merson. “It’s weird because he’s a winger, but that’s how good he is.
“I always like to pick someone out of the ordinary, so I’m going to go for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be in the running for the Premier League Golden Boot as well.
“He started the 2020-21 season in stunning style, but Everton didn’t play to his strengths in the second half of the season.
“Rafa will make sure Calvert-Lewin gets the service he requires and urge his wingers to put balls into the box. He’s going to play every week and could have an outside chance of winning the Premier League Golden Boot if he builds on what he achieved last season.”

Whilst Everton’s season was indifferent and it ended without any real fight, passion or life on the pitch, one thing that was a constant was Calvert-Lewin.
Carlo Ancelotti’s reign at Goodison Park won’t be a memorable one, but one thing he did do is transform Calvert-Lewin as a forward.
The Englishman is now more selfish without the ball, deadly in the penalty area and his aerial qualities are on another planet.
