‘Out of order’: Everton now want a manager Frank Lampard has had issues with

According to The Athletic, Marcelo Bielsa has emerged as one of Farhad Moshiri’s number one candidates to replace Frank Lampard at Everton.

It’s almost been 12 months since Bielsa last took charge of a football match, but he looks set to be offered a return to the Premier League with the Toffees.

As we saw at Leeds United, Bielsa knows how to completely transform a club’s fortunes, and if there’s any team in England that needs drastic change in the coming months, it’s Everton.

This would be an intriguing appointment for a number of reasons, but there’s an extra level of intrigue added due to the fact Bielsa would be replacing Frank Lampard – a gaffer he’s previously had issues with.

Indeed, Bielsa and Lampard clashed on numerous occasions during the Argentine’s time at Leeds, most famously back in 2019 when the spygate scandal made headlines.

Lampard had issues

Lampard spoke about his clash with Bielsa on The Overlap last year.

“The spygate thing came the day before we played them. Harry Wilson was injured and he wasn’t in the shape work we did,” Lampard said.

“It wouldn’t have changed the game and they beat us the next day. He (the spy) was in the bushes laying down and had his binoculars out.

“He could’ve only got little information, but Bielsa said that much information wins them the game and I get that. But I feel like it was wrong and I had to defend that. I couldn’t come out and say it was a little bit out of order, I had to say it was out of order.

“The good thing from my point of view is that it got the bit between my teeth. As it got to the play-off semi final, we played them in the home game and they beat us quite convincingly, it was only 1-0 but they played quite well.”

Painful

Lampard must be reeling after losing his job at Goodison Park, but it will be even more frustrating for him if he’s replaced by a manager who has been a thorn in his side for years.

Bielsa and Lampard, quite simply, don’t get on, and it will be very frustrating for Lamps to see one of his biggest rivals come in and take his job.

Whether or not Bielsa takes up this role remains to be seen, but this could be a disaster for Lampard if he does.
