Out of contract in June, should Nottingham Forest make a move for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith?

Nottingham Forest have had problems in goal this season, with Wildsmith behind Keiren Westwood in Sheffield Wednesday’s pecking order.

A new goalkeeper will likely feature highly on Nottingham Forest’s summer shopping list, with Stephen Henderson injured and Vladimir Stojkovic so far unconvincing.

Though the Reds’ number one shirt is currently with Jordan Smith, it would be some surprise if another shot-stopper did not arrive through the City Ground doors in the coming months – regardless of how well the youngster performs in the meantime – and Sheffield Wednesday’s Joe Wildsmith could be of interest.

Wildsmith has impressed on rare outings for the Owls, whose academy he progressed through to make his debut in late 2015. An assured performance against Arsenal only enhanced the ‘keeper’s reputation, and a call up to England’s Under-21 squad followed shortly after, although the form of Keiren Westwood has restricted Wildsmith’s action over the past year and a half.

The 21-year-old’s contract expires in June, however, and with Westwood unlikely to be budged, he may be considering a future away from Hillsborough for the good of his own career.

Wednesday almost certainly wouldn’t want that, but would be powerless to prevent Wildsmith’s departure if they cannot secure an extended deal for the local lad – who will perhaps be seeking first-team football above all else next term.

The Owls would, however, be due some compensation if Wildsmith was to leave for another English club, provided they at least offer him a new contract on equal terms – although it’s nothing that Forest would not be able to afford.

There’s no question he’d be an improvement on most of the Reds’ options – although on current form, Smith could be difficult to oust.
