The Fiorentina captain plays in a position which West Brom are reportedly keen to strengthen.
West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis
West Bromwich Albion scouts watched Fiorentina’s 2-2 with Torino on Monday, the Birmingham Mail reports.
The mission, it is claimed, was part of the Baggies’ search for a new centre-forward, with Salomon Rondon their only recognised player in that position.
But with Fiorentina’s Nikola Kalinic the subject of a £43 million bid from China this winter and Torino’s Andrea Belotti repeatedly linked with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, for a fee even higher than the Croatian’s, it is perhaps unlikely that either would be deemed realistic West Brom targets.
There were, however, 26 other players on show at Stadio Artemio Franchi, so could it be the case that the Baggies’ eyes were elsewhere instead?
The Express & Star reports Tony Pulis’ team are also chasing a centre-back this summer, and as luck would have it one of Fiorentina’s could be going free at the end of the campaign.
Despite being a first-team regular and captain of the Viola, Gonzalo Rodriguez is yet to sign a new deal with the Serie A side and, at 32, may be eyeing a fresh challenge after five years in Florence.
Fiorentina’s Gonzalo Rodriguez
With fellow Argentine Claudio Yacob and fluent Spanish speakers Allan Nyom and Rondon at The Hawthorns, a move to the Black Country could be ideal for Rodriguez, whose vast experience – 21 Champions League appearances and seven international caps – is not to be sniffed at.
Would Gonzalo be a good signing for West Bromwich Albion?
