Jamie Carragher has praised ex-Arsenal boss, Unai Emery, for the ‘brilliant coaching job’ he has done with Villarreal, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (12/04/22 at 10:55 pm).

On Tuesday, Emery, who was sacked by Arsenal in 2019, helped the Spanish club reach the semi-finals of the Champions League by beating Bayern Munich.

After the game, Emery namedropped Arsenal by highlighting back to the last time Villarreal were in the Champions League last four.

That happened in 2006 when they suffered a late, late defeat to the Gunners, who eventually went on to lose the final to Barcelona.

Nonetheless, after a troubled time in the Premier League, Carragher has praised Emery for what he has done with the current Europa League winners.

“This is a brilliant coaching job from Unai Emery,” said Carragher. “It’s not just tonight. Remember last season? When he got to the Europa League final and he out-coached, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, without losing a game.

“Got to a Europa League final. Now he’s in the Champions League semi-final. Going back to that Europa League final, it’s only the fact that Davie de Gea missed a penalty that they are in the Champions League.

“We can talk about Bayern Munich. Nagelsmann is a young coach. He’s going to be a top coach. A great coach. But he has been out-coached and out-foxed, whatever you want to call it, by Unai Emery.

“He has nowhere near the players they have got. They have been clever. Let them have the ball and caused real problems.”

It needs to be remembered when Villarreal won the Europa League last season, Emery knocked Arsenal out on his way to making history.

Now he has taken the La Liga side to much higher levels, whilst those in north London, under the stewardship of Mikel Arteta, try to get back into the Champions League.

It will be interesting if Emery continues to succeed and Arsenal don’t show any improvement under Arteta how both will be viewed by fans.

At this moment in time, Emery’s stock is at the highest it can be and he has certainly picked himself back up from that Arsenal sacking a number of years ago.
