Newcastle United fans might be bored with the whole Philippe Coutinho thing now, but it might just have legs.
Mundo Deportivo reported last month that the Magpies had already contacted Barcelona about bringing the Brazil playmaker to St James’s Park.
Thing is, Chelsea have been considered to be winning the race to sign him, but the Blues may not be interested anymore.
That’s because they’ve just signed Timo Werner on a £16 million-a-year deal [The Independent] and with the economy in football the way it is now, they more than likely won’t be sanctioning another huge-money deal for Coutinho.
That could potentially open the door for Newcastle and although it isn’t only them and Chelsea in the race, it may make it easier if the reported frontrunners have bowed out.
Of course, this is immaterial unless the Premier League approves the £300 million takeover of the North-East club, which would take United to a new level in terms of spending you would imagine.
But if the West Londoners are out of the equation, which is very possible, then Newcastle shouldn’t worry about Chelsea’s involvement in the 28-year-old any longer.
