The good thing about having world class players is that transfer targets are obviously going to want to play alongside them – and that seems the case with one star on Liverpool’s reported shopping list.
SportBILD reported last week that Liverpool were keen to sign Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak.
The Bundesliga side might be forced to sell the £31 million-rated defender this summer due to financial pressures, the German outlet added earlier this week.
Liverpool’s Director of Football Michael Edwards is quite the transfer guru, but he probably won’t find it too hard to pitch life at Anfield to the 20-year-old; not only because they’re Premier League champions and technically still European champions, but because they have Virgil van Dijk in their ranks.
Yep, Kabak, in his own words, idolises the towering Dutch defender and surely the prospect of playing alongside him on Merseyside will make Edwards’s job much, much easier.
Here’s what the young stalwart told Bundesliga.com in 2019: “My personal aim is to become a top defender in maybe two or three years, like Virgil van Dijk. He’s my idol, I really like him. As a footballer? I like his style and how he plays, so I can say he’s my football idol.”
With that in mind, you probably wouldn’t have to twist Kabak’s arm too much if you offered him the chance to play with and learn from one of the finest defenders of his generation, one who finished second behind Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or stakes last year.
Whether Liverpool are genuinely interested, though, remains to be seen. If they are, the feeling might well be mutual.
