Guillem Balague delivered something of a buzzkill for Newcastle United this past weekend.
The renowned Spanish journalist wrote in Sport that even when the Magpies’ £300 million takeover goes through, the St James’s Park club won’t be able to spend huge sums of money.
Balague claimed that Newcastle would only be able to spend a net figure of around £26 million for the next three seasons on transfers, due to Financial Fair Play regulations.
But an update from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is potentially good news for the North-East club.
Ceferin has revealed to BeIN Sport: “Yes, we will adapt it and we think it’s important to adapt it because the situation for the clubs is not easy.”
If FFP regulations are relaxed a little due to the ongoing global health emergency then it might allow Newcastle’s prospective new owners to spend a little more than the figure Balague has written about this past weekend.
They might not be able to sign Gareth Bale, but maybe, just maybe, some of their other targets, such as Philippe Coutinho or James Rodriguez, might be a little more realistic without the financial constraints.
The Saudi-led takeover is yet to be authorised by the Premier League despite the deal being lodged over a month ago.
