According to Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira, his club have turned down a £53 million bid for reported Liverpool target Carlos Vinicius.

The Eagles forward has been superb this season. He has posted 15 goals and four assists in just 14 league starts prior to the Covid-19 suspension.

Spanish editorial AS claim Liverpool have identified Vinicius as an ideal alternative to fellow Brazilian forward and false number nine Roberto Firmino.

Vieira, meanwhile, told JN how his side turned down a bid from an unnamed club.

“I received an offer of 60m euros (£53 million) for Vinicius and did not sell. He is priced at 100 million,” The Benfica president explained.

While Premier League leaders Liverpool aren’t named as the potential buyers, the Reds are one of only a few who could fork out such a fee and some clubs would stand to benefit.

Why Santos and Palmeiras stand to benefit from a Vinicius sale:

According to FIFA rules, Brazilian clubs stand to gain up to 5% of any future transfer fee if the player was contracted and trained in their academy between the ages of 12 and 23.

Vinicius featured at Santos for three years, and then Palmeiras prior to becoming a senior.

UOL claim the Brazilian duo stand to share 5% of the 25-year-old forward’s future transfer fee.

Even if Benfica accepted a lesser £60 million fee, Santos would still earn at least £800,000 while Palmeiras would net around £550,000.

UOL add that such figures could make a huge difference during the global health crisis.

Benfica resume action today at home to Tondela. The Eagles have the chance to overtake Porto at the top of the Portuguese table with a victory.
