In terms of transfer news, there isn’t much regarding Arsenal right now.

Well, incomings that is.

As far as departures go, there’s always mumblings of somebody quitting Arsenal in one way or the other.

And at the moment, Ainsley Maitland-Niles is being heavily linked with a transfer to Roma.

Jose Mourinho is said to be a fan of the versatile Gunners product – and if Fabrizio Romano is right, it might well be imminent.

Indication

Romano tweeted earlier on Wednesday that the Italian club had loaned Riccardo Calafiori to Cagliari.

And if that’s the case, Mourinho’s clearly making room for the Arsenal player.

That’s because Calafiori has played nine games under the Portuguese coach this season and letting him leave only makes sense if somebody’s coming in.

And given that Maitland-Niles has flourished in a left wing-back role for Arsenal, the position where he helped them to FA Cup glory in 2020, it’s very probable that the Englishman is Calafiori’s replacement in the Italian capital.

Let’s be honest, in a left-sided defensive role is where Maitland-Niles has shown the most promise during his career with the North Londoners.

He can play midfield and right-back, but a move to Mourinho’s Roma could only be as a left-back or left wing-back and there’s almost certainly a correlation between Calafiori’s exit and the Arsenal man’s arrival.
