In our view, Jurgen Klopp was off the mark when it came to his recent rant about Liverpool lacking the financial resources to sign priority targets, as Tottenham seemingly proved the man wrong as bargain additions such as £21.5 million (Sky Sports) man Rodrigo Bentancur were even available last year.

For those that are unaware, the Liverpool boss was livid at reporter, Carl Markham after he questioned whether the club’s unwillingness to make new signings was a financial issue.

Considering the Reds’ main area of concern on the pitch remains their midfield, Tottenham unintentionally made Jurgen Klopp contradict what made Liverpool one of the best recruiters in the game by makinh bargain additions such as Bentancur.

Over the years, the popular idea has been that while the Merseyside-based side may not possess the wealth of resources that Manchester City do, their incredible eye for talent allows them to match their rivals to go blow-for-blow in title races.

The signings of now-club legends such as Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson to name a few have all been some of the greatest bargains in Premier League history.

Considering Jurgen Klopp could do with a midfielder or two, pinning the blame on FSG’s unwillingness to spend big is not the best rationale, considering clubs like Tottenham are signings gems like Bentacur for such a reasonable fee back in January last season.

As alluded to earlier, that was the Liverpool way of doing transfers.

Imagine if Klopp’s side, who have forked out around £180 million on new signings since the start of 2022, including Darwin Nunez for a club-record fee of £85 million (Sky Sports) used some of their budget to sign Bentancur in January 2022.

An affordable, and incredibly complete midfielder who would work as the perfect partner in the No.8 position alongside Thiago would have made perfect sense.

Instead, new contracts were handed to James Milner, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson; 3 midfield stalwarts that showed signs of declining even last season.

Earlier, the one-time Premier League champions would have had the foresight to see these declines coming and made a smart, yet bargain signing back when many did not oversee a storm brewing.

Now, they seem not to.

While being ambitious in the market is always a pro, one way, as shown by Liverpool is not by necessarily breaking transfer records but by taking calculated and frugal risks in the window.

And the more one looks at the masterstroke of a signing Tottenham made by bringing in Rodrigo Bentancur, the more confusing the comments made by Jurgen Klopp recently seem.
