Everybody knew Tottenham Hotspur needed a centre-back before last night’s defeat.

Now, they definitely need to bolster that position in the four remaining days of the January transfer window.

Tottenham lost 3-1 to Liverpool in North London and it was an erratic defensive display, with Eric Dier and Joe Rodon both posting shaky performances.

Toby Alderweireld is out of favour with Jose Mourinho right now and the same has been true of Davinson Sanchez for virtually the whole season.

Earlier this month, there was speculation about the Lilywhites signing Sergio Ramos [Evening Standard] and although the trail went cold, maybe, just maybe, there’s hope for Mourinho on this front again.

According to Marca, contract talks between Real Madrid and the veteran defender have now stopped.

With the 34-year-old out of contract this summer, this isn’t a good sign at all and if Real feel that there won’t be a breakthrough, they’ll have to sell this month or run the strong risk of losing him for free in June.

He might turn 35 in March, but Ramos, who has won five league titles with the Spanish giants and four Champions League crowns, has a wealth of pedigree and trophy-winning experience, which is in short supply in this Tottenham squad.

The window shuts on Monday and it doesn’t give Mourinho or Daniel Levy a lot of time to get a centre-back in – let alone one of Ramos’s profile – but the North Londoners absolutely do need one and the news from Marca is certainly encouraging, if the Spaniard is a legitimate target.
