Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic for years.
Even as far back as Mauricio Pochettino’s reign in North London, the Lazio powerhouse was on the Lilywhites’ radar.
In 2018, The Mirror reported that Tottenham – then managed by the Argentine – were keen on the midfielder.
And again in 2020, Footmercato in France cited Spurs’ interest.
The trail has gone pretty cold since then but Tottenham may now have a way in which to bring the Serbia international to England – and for less money than he’s worth.
Exchange
Last week, Steven Bergwijn was linked with a switch to Lazio, who value Milinkovic-Savic at around £67 million.
And with there being speculation about him leaving Italy, there seems to be a window of opportunity for Spurs to offer their Dutch winger and cash in exchange for the big man.
Bergwijn is worth nowhere near what Milinkovic-Savic is, meaning that Tottenham may still have to come up with one hell of a kicker in order to make the Rome-based outfit budge.
But logically, if the club who own a long-time Lilywhites target need a Spurs player, well such a scenario has the potential for creative resolutions.
Of course, the Serie A side might not even be interested in the Netherlands attacker.
But if they are, and if they know that Milinkovic-Savic will be leaving eventually, then there’s good business to be done for all parties here.
