Liverpool have been rocked by yet another injury.
It was widely reported on Wednesday that Joe Gomez had suffered a ‘serious’ knee issue while training for England yesterday.
The Premier League champions have revealed this afternoon that the 23-year-old has undergone surgery on a tendon.
Liverpool added that there was no damage to any other ligament in the knee but failed to provide an update on how long he’ll be absent.
It’s obvious that he’ll be absent for a while and Jurgen Klopp is going to need a replacement in January, especially given that Virgil van Dijk, another central defender, has already been ruled out until next season.
And one player who Liverpool should target is Jerome Boateng.
Boateng turned 32 in September but he is still a very effective player by virtue of the fact that he helped Bayern Munich to a treble last season, alongside Reds midfielder Thiago.
And even better, he’s available for a cut-price fee.
The German giants will not be extending his contract [Sport Bild] and with Boateng’s deal up next summer, Bayern must either sell in January for whatever they can or lose him on a free in nine months.
These are desperare times for Liverpool and when a World Cup winner of Boateng’s vintage is available for peanuts, and when you have a defensive crisis to consider, then this is an opportunity that needs to be taken advantage of.
He is no spring chicken, but in terms of short-term cover, there are worse options.
