According to 90Min, Aston Villa are one of the teams in for Kieran Trippier, and this could be a very exciting signing if the Midlands club can pull this one off.
Indeed, we all know just how good Trippier is. After all, he’s managed to pick up 35 caps for England in an era packed full of immensely talented right-backs.
However, Trippier joining Villa is that much more exciting because of Steven Gerrard’s influence at the club.
Gerrard may have only been in senior management for a few years, but one thing has been very clear in his career so far. He loves an attacking full-back.
James Tavernier was undoubtedly one of his best players at Rangers, and while he was a right-back, he was one of the SPFL’s greatest attacking weapons.
He hit double figures in terms of goals and grabbed nine assists for the Gers last season, and there’s reason to believe that Trippier could bring a similar level of attacking potency to Villa Park.
Now, we’re not going to claim that Trippier has the capacity to hit Tavernier-level numbers in the Premier League. After all the English top-flight is a different kettle of fish to the SPFL, and Trippier has never hit more than four goals in a single season.
However, given how brilliant Trippier is at striking a ball and how much freedom he would potentially have in a Gerrard system, there’s reason to believe that he could bring a lot to this side.
He grabbed six assists in 28 games in La Liga last term in a very defensive Diego Simeone side, and there’s every reason to believe that in a Gerrard team where he’s given the license to roam, he could create an unbelievable number of chances.
Gerrard would love to have a creative right-back at Villa and Trippier is one of the best around right now.
