Cast your mind back to early November 2019.

It wasn’t the best time to be a Spurs fan, Mauricio Pochettino was just one week away from getting the sack, and rumours were circulating about who could replace the Argentine.

One man who was linked with a move to north London was Julian Nagelsmann, and fans were very excited about the prospect of the young German coming to take charge of the club.

However, here we are one year on, and it seems as though Spurs made the right choice in appointing Jose Mourinho.

Now, we aren’t going to argue that Nagelsmann is a poor manager as he’s done a great job in the Bundesliga with both Hoffenheim and Leipzig, but he doesn’t have the experience that Mourinho has in English football, and his record against English teams in Europe is poor.

Aside from a two-legged victory over Spurs last season, he has lost every single match he has managed against a Premier League team, including an embarrassing 5-0 loss to Manchester United last month.

There’s every chance that the 33-year-old would have come to the Premier League and struggled, and Spurs were better off putting all their eggs in Mourinho’s basket, a man who has three Premier League titles to his name.

Just look at where Tottenham are now, they’re second in the table and are being lauded for playing some of the best football in the country, and that’s in no small part down to Mourinho.

Fans were keen to see Nagelsmann take the reins this time last year, but Tottenham may have dodged a bullet by ignoring those calls and getting the experienced Mourinho through the door to steady the ship after Pochettino’s final months left the club in a perilous position.
