According to La Gazzetta, Atalanta have identified reported Southampton target Joakim Maehle as a replacement for Timothy Castagne who is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Castagne is seemingly set to leave Atalanta this coming summer.

The 24-year-old right-back is out of contract in 2021. The Corriere Della Sera claim Castagne has no intentions of extending his deal with Atalanta.

The Serie A side will now look to sell him this summer. And, Tottenham are among the clubs keen on his signature with Spurs’ Daniel Levy supporting a move.

Atalanta, meanwhile, see Genk fullback Maehle as an ideal replacement.

But the Denmark U21 international is also highly sought-after.

Maehle almost left Genk in January. He told Dezondag he was disappointed not secure a move with West Ham United cited as strong suitors in the report.

Ekstra Bladet say Crystal Palace and Southampton are also keen. Maehle, meanwhile, told reporters for the Danish editorial how the Saints saw an £11.5 million bid for him turned down.

“The interest from Southampton was concrete, but their bid was not high enough, but I still believe that one day I might end up in Southampton and the Premier League,” Maehle explained.

Southampton appeared in pole position to sign Maehle with the player seemingly keen to move to St Mary’s.

But Atalanta could now change his mind. They have Champions League football to offer, and Castagne’s exit could open up a regular first-team spot in Bergamo.
