Romelu Lukaku could come back to haunt Jose Mourinho this summer with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that the Inter Milan attacker is hoping to lure both Thomas Meunier and Tottenham Hotspur hero Jan Vertonghen to the San Siro.

In an ideal world, Mourinho would succeed in reuniting one Belgian defender with another in North London.

Spurs have not given up hope of keeping long-serving fan favourite Vertonghen on English shores, with the 33-year-old due to become a free agent in July as it stands.

L’Equipe suggested that a fellow Rote Duivel international is a key part of Mourinho’s plans, with Meunier holding talks over a deal that would see him swap PSG for the 2019 Champions League finalists.

However, a man the Tottenham boss knows better than most could hold the key to negotiations.

Reports in Italy suggest that Lukaku is doing his level best to tempt two of his Belgium teammates to Milan.

A man who led the line for Mourinho at Manchester United has an excellent relationship with Meunier and Vertonghen; both of whom could join Antonio Conte’s Nerazzuri squad for absolutely nothing as they approach free agency.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Porto boss must be wondering if everything is conspiring against him right now. Since taking Mauricio Pochettino’s job in November, Mourinho has seen Tottenham drop out of both the Champions League and the FA Cup while suffering an unprecedented injury crisis.

The last thing he needs is to lose a star defender and a top transfer target thanks to one of his former players.
