Barry Douglas is reportedly on the verge of leaving Leeds United, and this could open the door for Leif Davis.

According to LancsLive, Championship club Blackburn Rovers are set to sign the Scottish left-back on transfer deadline-day today.

It will come as a surprise to some Leeds fans, as Douglas is the only senior recognised left-back in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

True, Stuart Dallas has done well at left-back, but the Northern Ireland international is a winger by trade, and so is Ezgjan Alioski, who has played well when he has been used at left-back.

However, Douglas’s reported exit could open the door for Davis, who is only 20 years of age and has made only a handful of appearances for the Leeds first team.

The youngster, who is able to play as a central defender as well, is very talented and rated very highly.

Legendary Leeds left-back Ian Harte told Football League World in March 2020 that Davis is “the best” left-back at the club, adding that he is “a top, top player”.

Davis has played 13 minutes in the Premier League for Leeds so far this season, and he made three substitute appearances in the Championship in 2019-20 and featured in four league games in 2018-19, according to WhoScored.

If Douglas leaves, then it is very likely that Bielsa will continue to play Dallas and Alioski at left-back, but Davis could get his chances, especially in cup games and as a substitute.

A potential exit for Douglas would leave Davis as the only recognised left-back in the squad, and that could come handy as the season progresses.

For now, Davis will have to continue to work hard and will have to make the most of the chances he could get, but the door could open for the youngster in terms of establishing himself as a dependable member of the first-team squad.
