Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Villarreal defender Juan Foyth, just half a season after Spurs sanctioned his permanent exit. But surely, the Argentine would be ideal under new Spurs boss Antonio Conte?
Foyth, 24, has been excellent since joining Villarreal in the summer of 2020 – initially on loan. In 2020-21, he starred on the right side of the defence under Unai Emery – helping the La Liga side win the Europa League.
A permanent £12.5million (Marca) fee saw Villarreal sign the Argentina international permanently from Spurs. But just six months after that deal went through, Real Madrid are now said to be keen on signing Foyth.
CalcioMercato report that Carlo Ancelotti is considering a move to sign the defender as he looks to bring in strength in depth at the back. But surely, Conte should consider rivalling Madrid – given he seems ideal for Conte?
Should Tottenham admit mistake, and look to beat Madrid for Foyth?
Foyth was raw at Tottenham. He lacked experience, and confidence. He has since added that to his game at Villarreal, becoming first choice under Emery. With that under his belt, Madrid want to sign him this summer.
But does that make him ideal for Spurs? Certainly, his versatility in defence would be perfect for Conte. He can play as a wing-back, a right-back, a right-sided defender in a three or in the middle of the defence, like Eric Dier.
While it would highlight the mistake that Tottenham should not have let him go permanently, instead just a loan at Villarreal. But Spurs need defensive surgery and Foyth’s form and versatility makes him ideal.
The major issue is likely to be the price and the instant loss that Spurs would make on Foyth. Selling him for £12.5million, it is likely he might now cost double or even more.
