Rangers might have secured one transfer target in the form of Ianis Hagi, but another one has slipped through their fingers.
It was reported by Goal.com last month that Gers boss Steven Gerrard wanted to bring Pedro Chirivella to Ibrox this summer.
Chirivella was at Liverpool at the same time as the Rangers manager – albeit as a youth player – but it looks like Gerrard won’t be taking the 23-year-old to Glasgow.
That’s because the Spanish midfielder has just signed for Ligue 1 side Nantes and the 39-year-old manager will know that he’s missed out on a major bargain.
Chirivella was available on a Bosman and in this climate of financial uncertainty, signing up a quality free transfer means that bit more because less money is available for fees.
Here’s what Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp once told The Echo about his now ex-player: “He is a wonderful player, he is a passing player, he is a big talent.”
At 23, there is still plenty of time for Chirivella to improve and playing in an inferior league to the Premier League, like the Scottish Premiership, on a regular basis could’ve brought the best out of him.
Rangers have a lot of work to do during this summer as they plot to end Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid, but the Spanish midfielder might’ve been another part of the puzzle – especially on a free.
