Rangers are among the clubs being credited with an interest in John Lundstram, after Sheffield United put the midfielder up for sale.
Whether or nor Rangers, who recently added Bongani Zungu to their options in Lundstram’s position, will move for the Liverpudlian – and self-confessed Steven Gerrard admirer – remains to be seen at this stage.
But any money spent on Lundstram in January could be put towards a player Celtic are said to be pursuing.
Yorkshire Live claims the Preston North End defender Ben Davies, whom The Sun has linked with a pre-contract move to Celtic, is a likely top target for the Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder.
Like Davies, though, Lundstram can speak to non-English sides about a summer free transfer from the new year, and that could yet scupper the Blades’ plan to raise funds through his sale.
An end-of-season switch may suit Rangers better – and not just financially – with Steven Davis out of contract and a decision to be made on a permanent deal for Zungu, who has yet to make his debut for the Gers.

The best case scenario for Rangers could be if Lundstram arrives at Ibrox for nothing and United beat Celtic to Davies anyway.
