Celtic were dealt a hammer blow earlier this month when it was reported that Fraser Forster didn’t fancy another spell in Glasgow.
The Scottish Sun claimed that the 32-year-old goalkeeper had changed his mind over returning to Parkhead and instead wanted to stay in the Premier League.
There has been speculation about the big man joining Arsenal and Chelsea, but Celtic shouldn’t throw in the towel just yet.
Neil Lennon said recently to Sky Sports that he’d love to have the player back as the Hoops prepare for a potential 10th Premiership title in a row – and a return shouldn’t be completely ruled out.
That’s because Forster was only being linked to North London as a replacement for Emiliano Martinez, who is flying at the moment and won’t be leaving anytime soon, while Chelsea are weighing up a £90 million bid for Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.
That would be a world-record deal for a goalkeeper and if it comes off, Frank Lampard won’t be needing the Southampton stopper in West London, even if he was only being touted as a number two anyway.
With Alex McCarthy impressing under Ralph Hassenhuttl, Forster might be back to square one.
Despite links to England’s elite, he might still have the same two choices as last summer: ride the bench under Hassenhuttl or return to Celtic.
And unless he’s quite fond of not playing, there could be another twist in this saga for Lennon yet – this time, a positive one.
