Manchester City could make a £150 million double-swoop for Kalidou Koulibaly and David Alaba, which would be worrying news for Liverpool.
The Guardian report that Pep Guardiola is planning to make major investments this summer, with City cleared to play in the Champions League.
And if Koulibaly and Alaba arrive at the Etihad Stadium, then Liverpool’s task of defending their Premier League title will be extremely difficult.
The major difference between Liverpool and City this season has been in defence.
While Liverpool have kept the best defensive record in the league, City have struggled.
With Aymeric Laporte ruled out for a large chunk of the campaign through injury and Vincent Kompany leaving last summer, Guardiola has failed to settle upon a reliable defensive pairing.
If City are to buy Alaba and Koulibaly, though, they will have sorted out almost every one of their problem positions.
Alaba would surely start for Guardiola’s men at left-back, while Koulibaly would partner Laporte in defence.
With Liverpool seemingly set not planning to make any high profile additions, they could really be punished by standing still.
And if City do pull off the double transfer then it should cause some serious concern around Anfield, as the gap between the two sides would surely be seriously reduced.
