It’s not transfer season without the odd shock rumour circulating England’s top-flight like a hungry agent trying to get a deal done for his out-of-contract player.

Well, Tottenham may just find themselves in that boat because it was previously reported by the Sun that Manchester City are keen on Harry Winks.

It was claimed that Pep Guardiola is a ‘big admirer’ of the England international, who has come through the ranks at Spurs.

Despite winning the League Cup, City endured a pretty difficult campaign last time out, which included Liverpool steamrolling past them to the title and then Guardiola’s men crashing out of Europe in familiar fashion.

As City have done over the years, many would expect them to react to such disappointment by making changes and bring big-name players through the door.

But not many would have expected Winks to be on that list, especially given that he is still growing as a player in North London.

Tottenham Hotspur’s record signings

  1. Tanguy Ndombele

    £56 million

  2. Davinson Sanchez

    £42 million

  3. Moussa Sissoko

    £30 million

  4. Erik Lamela

    £29 million

  5. Steven Bergwijn

    £25 million

Winks is a player who does divide opinion. On one hand, some feel he is an underrated player, who works well in tight areas as a number six, he does the simple things right and he makes those ahead of him better.

Then there are others who feel he is overrated, doesn’t possess real attacking flair and only has simple qualities to his game.

But when someone with the footballing brain, such as Guardiola, is seemingly an admirer of you then that perhaps says a lot.

Winks is still growing in Tottenham’s midfield and he is trying to make a name for himself on the international stage with England.

Either way, it would be interesting to see what Spurs’ stance would be if Man City do come in with a tempting offer for their academy product.
