Our view: Noussair Mazraoui would regret choosing Leicester over Tottenham

Premier League pair Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City are both reportedly interested in Ajax’s Champions League star Noussair Mazraoui.

It’s not easy trying to force your way into the starting XI when your main rival is an international full-back in the form of his life. Just ask James Justin.

The former Luton Town flyer has not kicked a ball in the Premier League since he joined Leicester City in the summer for £10 million, though that is not to say he has struggled to adapt to life at the Foxes. It’s just that, in Ricardo Pereira, Leicester have arguably the top flight’s most in-form right-back – and he is all but undroppable right now.

Thankfully for Justin, he can play on the left too and once Christian Fuchs bids an emotional farewell to the King Power Stadium, he should find game time easier to come by.

But considering how little action Justin has had since signing, it would be pretty much nonsensical for Noussair Mazraoui to follow in his footsteps, especially as Ricardo isn’t going anywhere soon.

According to claims from AS Roma Live, Ajax’s rampaging right-back is on Leicester’s radar – but a move to top flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur would be far more fitting for a Moroccan international who proved to be shock revelation of a thrilling 2018/19 season at the Amsterdam Arena.

21-year-old Mazraoui is apparently on Spurs’ radar too and, with yet another brainless Serge Aurier blunder still fresh in the memory (the much-maligned Ivorian gave away the stupidest of penalties in Sunday’s defeat at Liverpool) Mauricio Pochettino is simply crying out for a more stable option to replace Kieran Trippier.

Mazraoui shone against Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus last season as Ajax stormed to the Champions League semi-finals, proving he can handle himself against elite opposition while providing four goals and five assists in all competitions. He’s more reliable than Aurier and offers the kind of attacking thrust that Kyle Walker-Peters simply cannot.

And, if it came down to a straight fight between life on the bench at Leicester and an almost guaranteed starting place at Tottenham, surely Mazraoui wouldn’t have to think long before he came to his decision.
