Say what you like about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but if Newcastle United pull this off then it’s a massive signing.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle have made contact with Arsenal over bringing their out-of-favour hitman to Tyneside.

The 32-year-old has been stripped of the captaincy at Arsenal and hasn’t played since December 6.

A January exit is genuinely on the cards and a transfer to Newcastle just might save their whole season.

As things stand, the Magpies are staring down the barrel of relegation.

The St James’s Park club have the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League table, shipping 42 goals and now they’re 19th.

Escape isn’t unrealistic by any means, but it is without a proven goalscorer – especially now that Callum Wilson is injured.

And when it comes to finding the net, there really isn’t many better than Aubameyang in the whole country.

Lethal

The Arsenal striker has gone off the boil these past 18 months.

But his first full season in England resulted in 31 goals – 22 in the Premier League.

The next year, the Gabon international, who is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, netted another 22 top-flight goals.

Yes, the Gunners have better creative players than Newcastle and therefore he’ll get more chances in North London.

But with a player like Allan Saint-Maximin then it’s honestly plausible that Aubameyang could get his groove back.

What the player needs more than anything is a fresh start and a switch to St James’s Park could represent that.

This is a player who could and probably would fire Newcastle to safety. His record speaks for itself.
