Manchester United have a legacy of forging iconic centre-forward partnerships.

Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke is probably the most fabled of the lot, but the list of illustrious combinations continues.

Because of his longevity, Wayne Rooney makes up 50% of most of the lethal striker duos United have wielded over the years.

His first full-time partner in crime was Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“It was like a dream come true when I was on the same pitch as him,” said the Red Devils record goal scorer about van Nistelrooy.

After the Dutchman departed Old Trafford, Rooney linked up with the likes of Luis Saha and Diego Forlan, before unlocking his connection with Carlos Tevez.

The two terrorised defences with their dogged work-rate and warrior attitude.

Then came along Dimitar Berbatov in 2008, arguably the smoothest operator to ever grace the Premier League.

Although he and Rooney took some time to jell, the end result was outstanding.

Javier Hernandez provided another type of duet, a player who thrived within the 18-yard area.

Rooney and Robin van Persie’s relationship will always be remembered for shooting United to the league title in 2012/13, the last of Sir Alex Ferguson’s career.

More recently, the former England captain played alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic under Jose Mourinho.

But perhaps the greatest rapport he ever built with another attacker was Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo and Rooney were an awesome blend of pace, power, trickery and tenacity.

Arguably, United have not seen a combo like it since CR7 departed for Real Madrid in 2009.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might just be about to recreate the dynamic R & R corporation in his current team.

Last weekend, Ronaldo started up front alongside Edinson Cavani for the first time since his return to the club.

They both scored in the 3-0 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur, with the Portuguese assisting the Uruguayan.

It was certainly a throw back to the United days of old.

Not only because two were leading the line, but Cavani and Ronaldo threw shades to Rooney and Cavani.

Cavani can power the engine, Ronaldo just has to drive along the road.

If Solskjaer maintains this happy marriage, then the Devils are in for one hell of a hot treat.
