Liverpool have reportedly turned down an offer from Premier League strugglers Watford to sign defender Nat Phillips. But could they now use it to their advantage – and sign long-term target Ismaila Sarr?

Phillips, 24, has only played three times for Liverpool’s senior side this season and the club are willing to listen to offers. However, the Echo claim that Watford have seen a bid rejected for the Bolton-born defender.

With Ibrahima Konate signed, and both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez fit and competing with Joel Matip for a place to start – Phillips needs to go. Despite rejecting Watford’s bid, they should use that interest.

Indeed, CalcioMercato reported towards the end of 2021 that Liverpool retain a ‘strong interest’ in Sarr. The winger is suffering with a ligament injury but is due to return to fitness sooner rather than later.

Should Liverpool include Phillips in a deal for Watford ace Sarr?

The £40million signing (Sky Sports) has reminded all that he is more than capable of shining in the Premier League – scoring five in his 12 games. In the Championship, he was crucial to promotion – 23 goals and assists in 39.

The absence of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane – who remain at AFCON – has highlighted the need for attacking reinforcements. Sarr is perfect for that role, something which Liverpool clearly agree with, given their interest.

The Echo report that Liverpool want £15million for Phillips. It remains to be seen how much Watford want for Sarr, but surely the offer of Phillips and a fee of £30million or more, would tempt Watford into cashing in?
