Liverpool are reportedly battling Manchester City in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven wonderkid Cody Gakpo. But the Reds have a potential trump card up their sleeve to beat Pep Guardiola’s men – in Nat Phillips.

Still only 22, Gakpo is sparkling for PSV. Already clocking up 116 appearances in all competitions for the Eredivisie giants, Gakpo has had a hand in 60 goals – scoring 31 and creating 29. A real talent.

Little surprise, then, that clubs as big as Liverpool and Manchester City are considering moves. Voetbal International report that both Premier League clubs are looking at a move for the Netherlands international.

But if Liverpool are to tempt Gakpo into a move to Anfield over the likes of Guardiola’s men and other clubs – then it is a big ask. However, the Reds have the perfect opportunity to strike a player-plus-cash deal.

Why Phillips could be crucial to Liverpool signing Gakpo…

This Is Anfield, among many others, report that PSV are taking a look at Phillips. Newcastle are also keen, with the Toon looking to strike a loan-to-buy deal with an obligation of £15million if Eddie Howe keeps them up.

But with PSV interested and Phillips seemingly keen to go, Liverpool can use the 24-year-old defender to their advantage in the race for Gakpo. Indeed, it might be preferred to sell Phillips to a club overseas.

It remains to be seen how much PSV rate Gakpo, but including a player worth £15million in the deal would not only tempt PSV more so – but it would make signing Gakpo a whole lot cheaper. A no-brainer.
