Well, we knew Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy was going to have to be creative in the transfer market this summer – and he has just proven that he can still pull off a bargain.
Spurs took out a £200 million loan earlier this summer to protect themselves against the financial losses of the global health emergency.
It’s a massive sum and one that ensured Tottenham – who moved into their £1 billion stadium in April of 2019 – wouldn’t be splashing the cash on new signings.
Economy was going to be the order of the day for Levy in this window and his deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a tremendous bit of business.
Tottenham completed a £15 million deal to sign the Danish midfielder this week but, with Kyle Walker-Peters joining Southampton for £12 million, Hojbjerg has really only cost the North Londoners £3 million.
Some might argue that they also lost Walker-Peters, which is obviously true, but it had been obvious for some time that the 23-year-old was going to be a squad player at best at Tottenham.
That absolutely isn’t true of Hojbjerg, who was the Saints’ captain and can reasonably expect to play regular football under Jose Mourinho next season and beyond.
Levy has paid £3 million, thrown a fringe player into the deal – even if Walker-Peters had impressed at St Mary’s toward the end of last season – and got a player with 100 Premier League appearances under his belt, as well as 33 caps for Denmark, in exchange.
It’s a cracking deal and it’s very encouraging for the rest of Spurs’ transfer window.
